The sagas were written down between 1220 and 1280, much later than the initial time of action 970–1030. Vinland was the name given to an area of North America by the Norsemen, about the year 1000 CE. Much tightened arguments in main text to defend short-i 'vinland' (grassland) interpretation. Shortened versions of these arguments are still in the main text. Before the discovery of archaeological evidence, Vinland was known only from Old Norse sagas and medieval historiography.

The only medieval and primary sources we have of Freydís are the two Vinland sagas; the Greenland saga and the Saga of Erik the Red. Leif therefore named the land Vinland.
